Mumpbeak

English-born, Norwegian-resident pianist/keyboard player/organist Roy Powell, whose recent releases on RareNoiseRecords count two full length albums with Naked Truth (with Lorenzo Feliciati and Pat Mastelotto) and his organ trio InterStatic with Jacob Young and Jarle Vespestad, creates astonishing near-symphonic progressive rock-fuelled compositions in Mumpbeak. Using a heavily modified set of pedals and a Hohner Clavinet, he successfully fuses the sound and textures of organ, keyboards and touch-guitar into a dark, relentless sonic maelstroem, at times reminiscent of King Crimson, Rush and Stickmen. He is supported in this endeavour by a four magnificent bass players, Bill Laswell, Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz, Lorenzo Feliciati and Tony Levin, all overdubbed by Laswell himself and by master King...

Magnetic

MAGNETIC is the exciting new album by London based music producer / musician GAUDI, which features a choice selection of sounds from the catalogue of internationally respected experimental label RareNoiseRecords, as well as direct contributions by several top caliber musicians from the worlds of rock, jazz and electronica. The making of MAGNETIC truly was a creational challenge, even for a man who has been working to dissolve musical boundaries for over 35 years. The initial idea of the project was to compose an album of entirely new music using sounds from the RareNoise catalogue as his ‘orchestra of musicians’; over the course of its development it grew though into a full spectrum artistic...

Frequent Flyer Live

Twinscapes Vol.2: A Modern Approach To The Dancefloor

Bassists Colin Edwin and Lorenzo Feliciati Blend ‘80s Pop and Prog On Twinscapes Vol.2: A Modern Approach To The Dancefloor For their second Twinscapes collaboration, bassists Colin Edwin (of Porcupine Tree and Metallic Taste Of Blood) and Lorenzo Feliciati (Naked Truth, Berserk!) address their respective ‘80s pop roots in the context of the same ambient soundscapes, freewheeling improvisations and prog-rock flurries that graced their 2014 self-titled RareNoise Records debut. Picture Soft Cell jamming with King Crimson, Ultravox with EL&P, Depeche Mode with Gentle Giant and you’ve got an idea of what’s happening on Twinscapes Vol.2: A Modern Approach To The Dancefloor In exploring dance floor music on Twinscapes 2, multi-instrumentalists Edwin and Feliciati pay homage to...

Shizaru

Picture a post-apocalyptic world where isolated parties from remote parts the globe communicate with each other in empathy and harmony as they share common tales of struggle, survival and hope amid a bleak wasteland. Now imagine the soundtrack of this scenario and you've got a grasp on the groundbreaking music of Naked Truth. The quartet's riveting eight-track debut, Shizaru draws from such sources as Miles Davis's Bitches Brew, Bill Laswell, King Crimson (of which Mastelotto is an active member), avant-jazz, free-jazz, prog-rock and art-rock. What makes it wholly unique, however, is the unit's creativity and chemistry and what Feliciati calls a "horizontal" approach to the music. He offers, "My intention was to have...

Ouroboros

Ouroboros is Naked Truth‘s second release for RareNoise. Recorded in part in Bill Laswell‘s studio in Orange under the watchful eye of engineer James Dellatacoma, produced by Lorenzo Feliciati and mixed by Bill Laswell, Ouroboros sees the wonderful Graham Haynes replacing Cuong Vu on Cornet, as the band, formed by Lorenzo Feliciati on bass, Roy Powell (of InterStatic) on Hammond, Fender Rhodes and prepared piano and Pat Mastelotto (of Stickmen and King Crimson) on acoustic and electronic percussion. Ouroboros gains in intensity compared to its predecessor whilst maintaining its musicality. The result is a mindblowing trip through jazz-rock, psychedelia and electric jazz, ideally bridging the worlds of 70’s Miles Davis and King Crimson.   Graham Haynes:...

Berserk!

The first-ever collaboration between Italian bassist-composer Lorenzo Feliciati and Italian vocalist-multi-instrumentalist-sonic provocateur Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari (aka LEF) defies easy categorization as it awakens the senses. At times darker than the Grim Reaper and heavier than the soundtrack for the Apocalypse, it can turn on a dime and swing insistently, or wail mournfully, or float mysteriously. Is it rock? Is it jazz? Is it ambient, avant garde, opera or something else? Regardless of tags, the music that Feliciati and Fornasari make together as Berserk! on their self-titled debut stands an imposing manifesto. It is an iron fist upside the head of complacency. With the two Lorenzo's at the core of this formidable collective, they brought...

Twinscapes

Two bassists from two different continents -- Italian Lorenzo Feliciati of the adventurous jazz-rock band Naked Truth and the intensely searching nu jazz group Berserk! and Australian Colin Edwin of the longstanding prog-rock band Porcupine Tree and the heavy-duty, experimental Metallic Taste of Blood as well as Ex-Wise Heads and Burnt Belief -- come together to make one potent statement on Twinscapes. With special guest appearances by acclaimed trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer, saxophonist David Jackson (of Van der Graaf Generator), Swiss percussionist Andi Pupato (of Andres Vollenweider and Nik Bartsch’s Ronin) and drummer Roberto Gualdi (of the Italian prog-rock band PFM), this bass-dominant project, which was mixed by renowned bassist-producer Bill Laswell,...

Avian Thug

Recorded in the South Of England at the end of their 2013 European Tour, Avian Thug is the third studio album by jazz-rock ensemble Naked Truth, after Shizaru in 2011 and Ouroboros in 2012. Avian Thug develops its themes across seven compositions, stretching from intensely furious electric jazz cavalcades, whose ancestry can be traced back both to Miles’ electric work but also more recent European progressive jazz and progressive rock, to extended soundscapes, whose colors are reminiscent of the work of Jon Hassell or Nils Petter Molvaer. Over the last four years, Naked Truth’s writing style has become progressively more incisive and focused, aided by the very tight co-production work of Lorenzo Feliciati and...

Tooth

On their follow-up to their formidable self-titled debut on RareNoise in 2013, Mumpbeak again conjures up memories of vintage King Crimson, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Gentle Giant and other prog-rock pioneers on Tooth. Led by the innovative keyboardist-composer and Oslo-based UK expatriate Roy Powell, whose other RareNoise output includes releases by Interstatic and Naked Truth, and featuring bassist and longtime collaborator Lorenzo Feliciati (Powell’s bandmate in Naked Truth who has also released the solo albums Frequent Flyer and KOI on RareNoise), this new edition of the prog-rock-jazz power trio showcases the remarkable Norwegian drummer Torstein Lofthus, who is a member of Red Kite and of the psychedelic prog-rock-jazz trio Elephant 9. Together this...
